Ruined, alone and facing a foreclosure on his business, Earl Stone takes a job as a drug courier for a Mexican cartel. His immediate success leads him to get easy money and a larger shipment that soon attracts the attention of DEA agent Colin Bates, who is charging. The Mule is an upcoming American crime film produced and directed by Clint Eastwood, who also plays the lead role. The script is by Nick Schenk, based on the New York Times article “The 90 year old drug mule of the Sinaloa Cartel” by Sam Dolnick.
The film is inspired by the real story of Leo Sharp, a veteran of World War II in his 80s who became a drug dealer and messenger of the Sinaloa Cartel. It is Eastwood’s first acting project since Trouble with the Curve in 2012, and his first leading role in a film he directed from Gran Torino in 2008.
The film also stars Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne, Michael Peña, Dianne Wiest and Andy García. Filming began on June 4, 2018 in Atlanta and Augusta, Georgia.
It is scheduled to be released on December 14, 2018,
